I had written about the Spokes, a hybrid wine and bike shop, in February 2012 after they opened behind SIP wine shop on Market Street (1920 Market St., 30, ). And in one case, lied to about what needed to be done to my bike. I had been delighted with Park, in part, after abandoning no fewer than six bike shops because I was so tired of being treated in various weird and icky ways. This is a loss for the bike world, but a gain for Wine Cellars at Stapleton (2955 Ulster St., 30), his new project. My longtime amazing bike guy, Chan Park, recently left LoDo Spokes (1920 Market St., 30, ), leaving the bike-repair world for good to concentrate on his other love, wines. To be honest, It had slipped my mind that they have a bike repair shop, even though I had just bought new pedals there a few weeks ago.

What’s up with that? I stopped by REI’s Denver flagship store (1416 Platte St., 30, rei.com) to renew my fishing license this past weekend and noticed folks wheeling in their bikes for repair. Or, drive from Denver to pick one up and sit in your rental car and eat it in the parking lot on the way to somewhere else.
Last year when Son Volt played, we went for the festival, stayed for the forest, and returned for the pizza.

The full festival with camping is $85, and online day passes are $40. To check out the bands, it costs $75 for a three-day ticket. This year Blitzen Trapper and Dawes are the headliners. The event is amazingly low-key, extremely family-friendly (there’s a swimming pool, tons of open space for kids to just run around and be kids, face-painting and crafts), and the bands play in a big tent where you can sit just feet away. You can hike around the more than 400 acres of ponderosa pines or camp during the festival (reserved sites only) at night, after the more than two dozen bands are done, there’s a big campfire and jam sessions. The festival, this year May 24-26, is held annually at La Foret (6145 Shoup Road, 80), a former church camp (now a summer camp and retreat center) in the forest with cabins and an adobe lodge. But its 200,00 acres of forest are hidden so well off Interstate 25 and Colorado 83, it’s easy to miss. Not many people even know Colorado has one, but we do, about 5 miles north of Colorado Springs.
